Welcome!

We are based in the Chevy Chase / Bethesda / Kensington region of Maryland and provide opportunities for boys from ages 11-17 to experience the outdoors, learn outdoor skills, provide community service, and grow through leadership experience in a well-structured program. We've been around since 1919 and our sponsoring organization is The Westlake-Troop 8 BSA Memorial Foundation. William Westlake was a Troop 8 Scoutmaster for 35 years and bequeathed his estate for the benefit of youth organizations in the Washington DC area. For more information about us, including our history, our Girls Troop 8, and the Westlake Foundation, please visit our public website. This operational website is for our BT8 members and access is largely restricted.

Shooting Sports Outing (April 20-21)

Posted on Mar 22 2024 - 12:58am

Troop 8 is planning a shooting sports outing the weekend of April 20-21; we will rendezvous at the WCCC Saturday morning at 8 a.m. and return the next day around 1 p.m. The event will be held at the Thurmont Conservation & Sportsman's Club. The Club facilities include campgrounds with potable water and restrooms (with showers), as well as porta-pots around the grounds. Scouts will cook and eat in the usual patrol fashion. The Club will handle the 45-minute safety/training briefings required by the BSA. We will divide into two groups for shooting. One group will be shooting .22 caliber rifles at stationary targets. This is recommended for smaller/younger/inexperienced boys as the .22 caliber rifles do not have any substantial kickback. A second group will be shooting clay discs thrown from a trap house on one of the trap fields. The shotguns involved have a substantial kickback, so this option is recommended for the older/larger/experienced boys.

Caving Expedition (March 16,17)

Posted on Mar 14 2024 - 11:52pm

Join us for an underground adventure as we embark on a caving expedition. We will meet at the WCCC on Saturday morning at 8:00 am for a 2+ hour journey to cabins at Camp Horizons in Harrisonburg, VA. Scouts should bring a bag lunch for Saturday and patrols will cook Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast. The cabins have hot showers and toilets. We anticipate returning to the WCCC on Sunday around noon.

Personal Fitness Merit Badge (March 11 at 7pm)

Posted on Feb 29 2024 - 10:24pm

All Scouts working on the badge should bring their completed record of food consumption to the meeting and be prepared to discuss healthy nutrition. Those who have completed their fitness test (including mile run) and have an approved training program should be logging their workouts. (Scouts who need to complete the mile run should arrange to do so with Mr. Hage at the BCC high school track after school.) Scouts should also bring signed blue cards so completed requirements can be recorded. Any questions should be directed to Mr. Wunsch or Mr. Hage.
